Soil Properties - Download Data

Use the links below to download the source data layer for the properties displayed in the Soil Properties web application.

These GeoTIFF grids were created by aggregating current USDA-NCSS soil survey data (SSURGO back-filled with STATSGO where SSURGO is not available) within 800m grid cells. The coordinate reference system (CRS) used by these grids is an Albers Equal Area projection centered on the Continental United States, based on the NAD83 datum. This information is embedded in the GeoTIFF grids, but you can manually specifiy the CRS using EPSG code 5070 or proj4 syntax: '+proj=aea +lat_0=23 +lon_0=-96 +lat_1=29.5 +lat_2=45.5 +x_0=0 +y_0=0 +datum=NAD83'.

Keep in mind that these layers are meant to show regional variation of properties at a coarse scale, and cell values may not be accurate at a specific location. For more information about each layer and its aggregation technique, see the metadata for the corresponding property in the Soil Properties app.

For categorical data (drainage class, soil order, etc.), cell values are integers that correspond to the associated categories outlined in the property's lookup table.

Soil Color
Soil color GeoTIFFs are available in either high (30m cell size) or low (270m cell size) resolution. They are single band integer rasters, with cell values corresponding to a lookup table of RGB soil colors. Color mapping of the source data can be imported into QGIS using either the style definition (see help here) or the color file (see help here) below. Alternatively the CSV file provides RGB lookup values for other use cases.
